Meet Ronell The 2025 Adjudicator

Ronel Erasmus – A Life in Music

Ronel Erasmus is a celebrated South African singer and musician with decades of experience in both light and gospel music. Music has been woven into her life from an early age, and her career reflects a balance of formal training, stage performance, and a deep passion for sharing her gift with others.

Early Life & Musical Foundation

  • Ronel grew up in Port Elizabeth as one of four children in a musically gifted family.
     
  • She started performing in television programs already during her school years.
     
  • In high school, she completed matric with two music subjects, laying the groundwork for a lifelong career in music.
     
  • She also achieved a wide range of formal music qualifications:
     
    • UNISA Piano Grade 8
       
    • UNISA Vocal Grade 8
       
    • UNISA Theory Grade 6
       
    • Classical Guitar Grade 5
       
    • Violin Grade 5
       
    • Church Organ Grade 5
       

This diverse training in voice, instruments, and music theory built a strong artistic and technical foundation.

Career & Performances

  • In 1988, Ronel joined the entertainment orchestra of the South African Police (SAP).
     
  • In 1989, she co-founded Touch of Class with Deon van der Merwe. The group went on to perform as the backing band for numerous well-known Afrikaans artists and became a household name in South African music.
     
  • Alongside this, Ronel developed a thriving solo career in gospel music. Her acclaimed gospel album Amen won the 2008 Huisgenoot Tempo Award for Most Popular Gospel Album.
     

Awards & Achievements


  • Winner of the Crescendo Female Vocalist Award in 1986
     
  • Huisgenoot Awards for Most Popular Gospel Singer
     
  • Vonk Awards for achievements in Afrikaans music
     
  • Recordings include 13 gospel CDs and 24 secular CDs with Touch of Class


Teaching & Contributions


  • In addition to her performance career, Ronel runs a music school in Glen Marais, Kempton Park, where she teaches piano, guitar, voice, and ukulele.
     
  • She is also the resident church organist and regularly performs at churches, schools, and women’s events.
     
  • Her dedication to teaching ensures that the next generation of musicians receive both solid technical training and inspiration to pursue their passion.
     

Philosophy


For Ronel, music is not simply a profession — it is a calling. Her journey has taken her from formal classical studies and opera training to light music, gospel, and a wealth of live performances. With her grounded personality, wealth of experience, and voice honed over decades, she continues to inspire young musicians and audiences alike.
